Frequent Asked Questions (FAQ)

Cloth Diaper FAQ

1) The benefit of cloth pocket diaper is endless such as:
• Both the diaper and insert are 100% reusable and washable

• No nasty chemicals in them, dioxin and harmful gel

• They are just as convenient as disposables

• Much less expensive than disposable diapers

• Only the soft suede cloth / micro flees touches your baby skin

• You can use them through multiple children

2) Why would I change to use cloth diapers when disposables are so readily available?

Cloth diapers are cheaper for parents, healthier for babies, and better for the environment than disposables.

3) What's so unhealthy about disposable diapers?
Chemicals are used to bleach the pulp in disposable diapers and to allow for super absorbency.

• The super absorbent chemical, sodium polyacrylate, absorbs and holds fluids in the diaper. This chemical has been linked to toxic shock syndrome, can cause allergic reactions, and is lethal to cats if inhaled.

• Death has occurred from ingestion of just 5 grams of this chemical. Pediatric journals contain reports of this chemical sticking to babies genitals. When the baby' s skin gets wet, this super absorber can poll fluids form baby's skin.

• Dioxin, the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is a byproduct of bleaching paper. Even in the smallest detectable quantities, dioxin has been known to cause liver disease, immune system suppression, and genetic damage in lab animals.

• Dyes found in some disposables are known to damage the central nervous system, kidneys, and liver.

• The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) received reports that fragrances caused headaches, dizziness, and rashes. Problems reported to the Consumer Protection Agency include chemical burns, noxious chemical and insecticide odors, reports of babies pulling disposables apart and putting pieces of plastic into their noses and mouth, choking on tab papers and linings, plastic melting onto the skin, and ink staining the skin.

• Plastic tabs can also tear skin, and disposables may contain wood splinters. *Taken from www.ecobaby.com.

4) How long do I need to change my baby's diaper?

• Your baby's diaper should be changed every 2-3 hours regardless of whether she is diapered in cloth or disposables.

• This will help prevent diaper rash and keep her skin healthier.

• Disposables fool parents into thinking their babies are dry, but once a diaper has been wet it should be changed immediately regardless of how dry it may feel.

• It is not uncommon for babies diapered in disposables to go more than 4 or 5 hours without a diaper change, which is very unhealthy!

5) How do I use my One-Size Cloth Diapers?

• Adjust the diaper sizing by choosing the right snap setting on the front of the diaper.

• To use the "Small" setting, snap on the bottom row of snaps.

• To use the "Medium" setting, snap on the 2nd row of the snaps.

• To use the "Large" setting, fully unsnap the front of the diaper.

• Tips: For overnight use, consider stuffing with two insert and setting the diaper to be one size larger than you would for the daytime use.

• Another alternative is you can actually add a hemp insert below the microfiber or use a hemp diaper doublers.

6) How to place the insert in the diaper ?

• Put the insert in your diaper.

• Hold the insert in one hand and place inside the slot (located under the protective flap).

• Align the front edge of the insert with the top edge of the Velcro strip.

• Using one hand to hold the front of the insert in place, stretch the diaper and smooth the insert flat as you pull your other hand out of the diaper.

• Tips: Many parents prefer to pre-stuff their diapers at the end of their washing routine.

7) Can the insert be washed? How long it can last before we must replace it?

YES. The diaper outer and the insert is washable! It can last long in proper care. You can even use it for more than one children.

Is the micro suede/fleece lining really give baby a dry feeling?

• Yes. Micro suede and fleece got the wicking ability. That's mean that it can wick the moisture pass through the insert, but the suede/fleece it self will be dry.

• Micro suede is more pilling and stain resistant than micro fleece.

• So the solid waste will rolled out the suede easily and can be wash easily also

8 ) Which Detergent should I use ?

• Wash once in cold water with no more than 1/4 cup detergent.

• Wash once in warm or hot water with more more than 1/4 cup detergent. Optionally (and only occasionally), add 1/4 cup of bleach to this cycle.

• Add an extra rinse to remove any lingering detergent in the diapers.

• Tumble dry on the medium setting.

9) How can I prevent diaper leakage?

The number one cause of leakage is a saturated diaper that just needs to be changed. Any diaper will leak once full. If your baby is having problems with leaks, check this first. 99% of the time, additional absorbency solves leakage problems. If that doesn't work, we've included some other trouble-shooting points below.

• Did you prewash?

First of all, make sure that you washed everything at least two times before using. There can be residue left on the fabric from the production process that can cause leakage.

• Is the insert flat?

Make sure that the insert is FLAT when you put the diaper on your baby. If it is twisted or wadded up, this can cause leakage. If your baby's build causes the insert to bunch up, consider using a Hemp on top of your insert. This helps to prevent the wadding that can occur with some builds.

• Is the wetness at the top edge of the diaper?

If the wetness is at the top edge of the diaper, make sure that the insert isn't pushing the lining fabric up against your baby clothing. The insert should be placed approximately one inch below the top edge of the diaper. The top edge of the diaper should be flat against your baby with the soft fabric against your baby's belly.

• Is the wetness at the legs or the tabs?

If the diaper is leaking from the tabs or the legs, change the diaper and remove the insert. If it is saturated then your baby definitely needs a more absorbent insert or a more frequent diaper change. If the insert isn't saturated, then the diaper may not be adjusted to fit your child properly or, if you are using a detergent that contains additives, your diapers may also have detergent buildup which can cause leakage.

CLOTH DIAPER CARE INSTRUCTIONS

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Everything you need to know about how to care for your cloth diapers

Before you START to use your cloth diaper

1. Please pre wash your cloth diaper for 2 times before use.

2. Wash your diaper in normal water with washing machine with half of detergent recommended. (cloth diaper don’t need too much detergent)

3. Dry your diaper outside on a clothesline where best with sun contact.

4. If you are hand washing it, please rinse with more water.

5. Please ensure NO Bleach & NO Softeners.

How to WASH your Cloth Diaper?

1. Remove the inserts from the pocket before washing.

2. Fold back your laundry tabs (Velcro) on the diaper. This is to avoid the diaper to be tangled during the washing process.

3. Throw everything into the washing machine!

4. Ensure the water level can completely cover the diaper and only use half of the soap powder that is recommended.

5. If you are washing with hands, please use a second rinse to ensure all of the detergent is rinsed out.

6. Dry your diaper in outside where there is sun. The sun will bleach away your stains naturally.

How to STORE your dirty Cloth Diaper?

1. All you need is a diaper pail or wet bag or a combination

2. Simply dump any solid poop into toilet and flush away the residual.

3. Squirt some soap powder on the dirty poop area

4. Rinse off the soap after a while.

5. Store dirty diaper in a wet pail filled with water.

6. Wait till the end of the day and dump all the diaper & inserts into the washing machine

7. For breastfeed baby, you don’t need to brush the suede. It will come off after you wash it in the machine.

Wet Pail And Dry Pail Methods

There are 3 basic methods for storing wet and soiled cloth diapers, wet pail, dry pail and wet/dry pail.

• Dry pail. All cloth diapers are placed in a covered pail.

• Wet pail. All cloth diapers are placed in a pail half filled with water. Make sure this pail is covered to prevent infant drowning.

How to perform STRIP Washing?

1. Build up refers to residue left by detergents, fabric softeners and other substances used to clean diapers. It may cause your diaper to be non absorbent and leak.

2. Stripping refers to the removal of residue on diapers.

3. To strip diapers, simply hand wash your diaper with your regular dish soap (gets the oils out), add a bit of dish soap to the fleece/suede,

4. Or you can either rub the fleece vigorously together or use a medium bristle dish brush or hard bristle tooth brush to scrub the fleece.

5. Turn inside out and repeat on this side.

6. Rinse very good, making sure that the water runs clear.

7. Toss to washing machine and wash it without detergent

Which Washing Method Works Best?

We recommend that you wash no more than two dozen diapers at one time, too much friction can cause pilling. Because detergent build-up can occur we also recommend that you use less detergent than you normally would. Send your diapers through normal cycles like you wash your laundry in your washing machine.

Use a 1/4 cup of your preferred detergent. No fabric softener needed. It will cause build up in the fleece fabric. If you are experiencing odor problems, 2-3 drops of Tea Tree Oil or Dettol can help. And make sure you fasten all Velcro tabs to avoid diaper chains.

After the washing portion is finished, your diaper should smell fresh and clean with no hint of urines, feces, ammonia or other unpleasant odors. Every now and then you may need to do an extra rinse to help eliminate odors caused from a build-up of detergent. Once they are freshly cleaned they are ready to go in the dryer or be line dried. The heat from the dryer or the sun help to sanitize the diapers.

Generally you should dry your diapers on hot for 60-90 minutes. Make sure you check the washing and drying instructions for every brand of diaper you buy, to extend the overall life of your diapers.

Laundering Mistakes!

The following products and processes are not recommended for use in laundering cloth diapers:

Clean diapers should not smell like anything. If your washed diapers smell 'swampy' or urine smell is strong, you should ensure that the water rinsing is sufficient. If your washed diapers smell like detergent, you should decrease detergent and/or increase water amounts. Notice that more water helps both problems. This can be done by raising the water level setting on your top loader, adding a soak cycle, or adding a rinse.

Chlorine Bleach - Yes it is great for killing germs but it is bad for cloth diapers and covers. I will actually eat away at the fibers in your diapers, leaving holes and frayed edges, decreasing their durability and absorbency. It will also adversely affect the waterproofing in certain cloth diapers. Baking soda and oxygen bleach are great whiteners to use instead.

Fabric Softener - This product is equated with super soft and fresh smelling clothing, so it is only natural that you would want to use it on your cloth diapers but this would be a mistake. Fabric softener, either in liquid or sheet form leaves a water-repelling residue on your diapers, making them less absorbent and useful in the very purpose that they serve. It also coats your diaper covers and can deteriorate their water-proof laminate.

Pure Soaps - Pure soaps are the more natural choice in the world of cleaners, but soaps will leave a residue on your diapers and covers similar to the soap scum you find in your tub. Soap scum on diapers makes them repel moisture rather than absorb it and it is also harsh on the laminates used in your diaper covers, making them absorb rather than repel water. The best choice for washing your diapers is to use detergent on them.

Disposable Diapers In Landfill

DISPOSABLE DIAPERS SUPPORT GREEN SOCIETY?

There are many types of disposable diapers available in our market for our convenience.  While we claimed that we are concious society, care about our environment, concern over the landfill spaces as we pushed for "greener society", disposable diapers are still disposable.

Disposable diapers that promoted by manufacturers as all natural, earth friendly, plastics free, chlorine free and even at times, compostable are filling up our landfills.

A disposable diaper with a plastics exterior lining is no difference than a 100% plastics free diaposable diaper once it has been tossed into a plastics household trash bag and dumped into a landfill. Its still plastics.

DO DISPOSABLE DIAPERS TAKE 500 YEARS TO BIODEGRADE?

Cloth Diaper experts often write about the length of time it takes for a disposable diapers to break down wothin a landfill. Experts cited 500 years as the time frame for the disposable diapers to biodegrade due to its plastics ingredient.

Since disposable diapers have not been in existance for 500 years, obviously, this is just a projection. Therefore this is based on what evidence? Actually there is no firsthand evidence of the decomposition rate of disposable diapers.

Juliet Lapidos describes how scientist estimate the length of time it takes to trash decompose.

" To make long term estimates of this sort, scientist often yse respirometry test. The experiment place a solid waste sample in a vessel containing microbe-rich compoct, the aerate the mixture. Other the course of several days, microorganism assimilate the sample bit by bit and produce carbon dioxide. The resultant carbon dioxide level serves as an indicator of degradation."

Respirometry tests are effective for products like newspapers and banana peels, but not plastics bag. Plastics bag are synthetic and not recognized as food by the microorganism to eat. In other words : Plastic cannot biodegrade.

Cloth Dispers are Not Disposable

As landfills are in concern, and when it comes to diapering, CLOTH DIAPERS are the BEST answer. Reduce impact by reducing personal waste. You can diaper your child with cloth and re-use the diapers over and over again.

When the product is advertise as biogradable, it does not mean it will biodegrade. Actually it means that it "CAN" biodegrade under the right circumstances.

AS for Landfills? They don't offer the RIGHT circumstance :(

Do You Think Cloth Diaper is Too Expensive to Buy?

Hi all,

At first when I start to explore this cloth diaper, I do think that they are expensive. However after doing some thinking, research and thinking some more, I concluded that it,s money worth spending. I just think that it is an investment to my baby and also it can be along term investment to my next children (later planning). :)) . Besides, I feel good when I can contribute and be part of saving our environment and preserved it to our next generation. I just feel sad when I can't do something better for future generation. For me this is the simplest thing that we can do in contributing to save our environment.

Well...I know many of people out there thinks that these diapers are too expensive. Actually, nowadays we have a lot of choices and also better price. It is not that expensive if we compared to Disposable Diaper (DD). I can assure you that it is a good investment.

I have a good news to people living around me ( in Johor Bahru). Do you still think that these diapers are too expensive? You are interested in trying them but you are not sure if its suit your baby well?

Here is your chance to rent diapers for RM7/week for the first week and RM5/week for the subsequent week. The main objectives for you renting them is so that you can actually 'TEST' the diapers with your child first so that you know for sure that it is going to be useful after you buy them. it would be such a waste of money if you did pay the full price of the diaper and found out that you don't like using them or your baby not comfortable with it.

If you are interested with this option, do email me at cdmodernoline@gmail.com. I will send you the terms & conditions.

That is for now...Feel free to contact me if you have further enquiries...

WASHING/DRYING AND CARING THE CLOTH DIAPERS

Sweetdollbaby (SDB) Cloth diapers are single use diapers. Wash the diaper and the insert after each use.

When wet, separate insert and SDB Diapers and store in a dry diaper pail.

If soiled, simply knock solids into toilet. Small solids stuck to the fleece will dissolve in the wash. Use a mini-shower toilet attachment to rinse off soiled diapers over the toilet. This works great and keeps your washer from having to work too hard.

HOW DO I WASH MY CLOTH DIAPER?

First, run rinse or soak cycle with no detergent. Use 1/4 to 1/2 of the recommended detergent for the wash. Run them through on another cycle without detergent to make sure all the soap is out. The second cycle isn't really necessary for everyone. Our child will break out sometimes with detergents so we like to extra rinse to make sure it is all out of there

Second, run a cold or hot cycle with detergent. Don’t use bleach on these diapers, it is destructive to the outer PUL. It is not good for the waterproofing of the outer shell. If you need additional cleaning, light Spray and Wash and good hot water washing works great.

Third, if your wash is not automatically followed by a rinse, run an additional rinse cycle. This step is only necessary with a particularly dirty load.

Fourth, tumble dry the diapers in dryer or hang to dry. Do not use fabric softener or pure soap. Never dry on high heat. The PUL outer layer by themselves dries very fast. You can save energy by hanging diaper covers to dry. This will also extend the life of the diapers. All major brands recommend these same methods.

An additional vinegar soak will help relieve smell from the diapers.

WHAT TYPE OF DETERGENT SHOULD I OR CAN I USE?

You should use a detergent you are comfortable with. Also you want to know how your baby's skin will react to it. Try to get detergent that is oil free, or it could cause the diapers to leak. The oil will prevent the outer shell from working to its maximum efficiency. A good example of a good detergent is Melapower scent-free, it contains no harsh chemicals. It does have some tea tree oils, but it doesn't’t appear to effect absorbency. It also acts as an antibacterial agent. Do not use bleach or fabric softener.

Most babies will experience little to no diaper rash while using cloth diapers. Cloth diapers breathe and let your baby’s skin stay naturally healthy. Do not use any rash or diaper ointments or creams with the diapers. The oils in these will make the SDB Brand Diaper lose some moisture protection.
